Southwest Tribes: YAVAPAI

	Yavapai The Yavapai Language is part of the Yuman Language family. The Yavapai had a matrilocal tendency with equal puberty rites for both boys and girls. At menarche, a girl had to get up before everyone else for four days and bring water and firewood to everyone else in addition to other tasks. A boy would have the same tasks at puberty when his voice began to change. For four days he had to do chores for everyone else and begin running. Both boys and girls have to use a scratching stick and a drinking tube during this time. Men would have to be adequate hunters before a girl's family would notice him. There was no formal wedding ceremony but an exchange of gifts between the two families and the man would continue to hunt for the wife's family.
