Northeast Tribes: SHAWNEE

	Shawnee The Shawnee Language is part of the Algonquian Language Family. Marriage is arranged by parents. The proposal is made by the boy's mother with gifts of skins. If the girl's family accepts, they return by offering a feast. The groom's family takes the bride back to their home with them. There is also sororal polygyny and sometimes just open cohabitation with gifts. Childbirth takes place in a separate lodge where the mother and child stay for 10 days. At the end of the 10 days, the child is named.
