Pima The Pima Language is part of the Uto-Aztecan Language family. The Pima were colonized over 300 years ago by the Spanish Catholics in 1694, and part of their original societal structure seems lost upon European intrusion. We know that today they have patrilineal clans and a household consists of the patrilineal extended family: the couple, married sons, and unmarried daughters. However, before the Spaniards, there was no paramount chief to suggest male leadership. The Pima had no formal marriage ceremony and a couple would just begin cohabitating together. Divorce was just as informal. Parents were supposed to arrange marriages according to the Spaniards and the only rules that seemed to apply were the incest rules. |
