Omaha The Omaha Language is a part of the Siouan Language family. At puberty, boys went on a vision quest fasting in prayers and meditation for four days. Courtships began in the spring and chastity was valued, but not expected. Some marriages were arranged. The groom gave the bride's family gifts. Her family dressed her in her best clothing, mounted her on a pony and sent her back to the groom's lodge. Most marriages were elopements. The couple simply returned to the groom's lodge and held a feast. Cohabitation meant marriage even without a formal marriage ceremony. In cases of a deceased husband, the husband's brother was obligated to marry the widow. There was polygyny, but few men had more than two wives. In cases of divorce, the children and the property belonged to the woman and the husband had to leave. On the eighth day after a baby was born, there was a public naming ceremony and the infant was initiated into the tribe. |
