Arctic and Subarctic Tribes: HAIDA

	Haida The Haida Language is part of the Nadene Language family. Descent was matrilineal in clans and it was a matriarchy. All property belonged to women and was passed down through women only. Each clan had a crest which was carved on totem poles, tattooed on the body, painted on faces, carved or painted on property, dishes, clothes, and even carved or painted on weapons, baskets, and canoes. Cross-cousins of the opposite sex were allowed to flirt and have affairs. The chief was a trustee of the lineage of property to be passed through the female clans.
