The Arapaho Language is part of the Algonquian Language family. The Arapaho had bilateral descent. Each teepee household consisted of a man, his wife (wives), their unmarried children, and an unmarried relative or two. They did not have any puberty ceremonies. Marriages were arranged by parents. Sometimes a man would request his female relatives to propose to the girl's family and there was an exchange of gifts between families. There was sororal polygyny and cases where a girl's sisters were married to the husband before they had reached puberty. Brothers from one family would marry sisters from another family. Childbirth was assisted by a midwife. Births were spaced every four years if possible. There was no sex during nursing and children were nursed for 2-3 years.
